Tour Highlights:
The Hidden Archipelago:
We explore the scenic areas around Bragdøya, navigating through calm, sheltered waters. You will see traditional Norwegian wooden cabins and historic sea houses up close.
The boat's unique design allows us to glide close to the shoreline, rock formations, and lush forests. To ensure the most comfortable and safe journey, the exact route is tailored by the captain based on the day’s weather and tide conditions.
The Legend of D/S Hestmanden:
We cruise to the home port of the legendary D/S Hestmanden, the only remaining Norwegian cargo ship to have survived both World War I and World War II. We get a fantastic close-up view of "The Lucky Ship" while we share its dramatic history and vital importance to Norway's freedom. Note: On the rare occasions the ship is sailing to a festival, we will still share its incredible story as we pass its historic docks.
Join us for a peaceful journey past Christiansholm Fortress into the serene river landscapes. Experience nature from the city’s only premium pontoon boat, surrounded by green hills and wildlife.
History and Nature Combined The adventure begins as we cruise past the historic Christiansholm Fortress. You will get a great view of the old stone walls and cannons that have guarded the city and the river mouth for centuries.
As we leave the harbor behind and glide up the river, the landscape changes completely. We enter a peaceful world surrounded by fascinating mountains covered in lush green forests. The trees reflect in the calm, clear water, creating a beautiful emerald atmosphere.
Wildlife and Heritage
Keep your eyes open as you navigate the river. If you are lucky, it is possible to see wild salmon jumping near the boat. Especially during the summer months (June to August), you might witness a glimpse of the salmon’s incredible journey as they migrate up the river to spawn.
This waterway also has a rich history. In former times, the Otra was used for log floating. It served as the main transport route for heavy timber, floating logs from the deep forests down to the coast to build ships and houses.
About
Nordic Waterways

A Story Written in Water
Welcome to Nordic Waterways. We are not just a boat charter; we are your gateway to the soul of Southern Norway.
To understand who we are, you must understand the history of our land. For thousands of years, the ocean was not a barrier here—it was the only road.
The Original Highway
Long before paved roads and cars, the water was the lifeline of the North. In fact, the name of our country, Norway, comes from the Old Norse word Norðvegr—meaning "The Way North."
The protected coastal channel through the archipelago was the "highway" that connected the country.
More than 1,000 years ago, Vikings sailed these exact waters. They used the sheltered straits of Kristiansand to navigate, trade, and seek shelter from the storms of the North Sea. When you look at the smooth granite rocks on our tour, remember that Viking eyes looked at these same landmarks to find their way home.
The River of Life
The waterways were also the engine of the region. The Otra River, which we explore on our tours, was the vein that brought riches to the coast. For centuries, massive timber logs were floated down this river from the deep forests to build ships and cities across Europe.
Today, the logs are gone, replaced by wild salmon jumping in the clear water. We no longer sail these waters for conquest or survival, but for peace and connection.
At Nordic Waterways, we invite you to follow in the wake of the ancestors—not with oars and sails, but in premium comfort.
The Vessel: Designed for Discovery
To deliver the best experience of these historic waters, we chose the best tool.
Our vessel, the Bennington 25L, is a masterpiece of American engineering adapted for the Nordic coast.
From Lakes to Ocean
Traditionally, pontoon boats were created for the calm lakes and rivers of the USA. However, our boat represents a major evolution in design. It is a Tritoon meaning it rests on three heavy-duty pontoons instead of two. This third center tube provides exceptional buoyancy and rigidity, making the boat fully seaworthy and stable enough to handle the coastal waves with comfort.
Going Where Others Can’t
The true magic of this design lies below the waterline. Unlike traditional V-shaped hulls that sit deep in the water to stay stable, our Tritoon glides on top of it. With a draft of just over 30 cm, we can navigate shallow waters that are impossible for standard boats to reach. This unique feature allows us to explore the shallow banks of the Otra River and slip into hidden, crystal-clear bays in the archipelago, bringing you closer to nature than ever before.
Uncompromising Quality
Bennington is the world market leader in luxury pontoons, known for superior craftsmanship. We invest in quality to ensure your safety and comfort. The boat is built to such high standards that it comes with an industry-leading 10-year warranty, giving us—and you—complete peace of mind on every journey.
Welcome to Nordic Waterways.
